Shoulder Conditions Flashcards
What are some signs of shoulder dislocation?
Shoulder may be visibly deformed, swollen and bruised. Movement will be severely restricted
Are the majority of shoulder dislocations anterior or posterior?
Over 90% are anterior dislocations
What position will the arm be after an anterior shoulder dislocation?
external rotation and slight abduction
What is bankart lesion caused from shoulder dislocation?
When part of the glenoid labrum is torn off by the dislocation
What causes a Hill-Sachs lesion?
When the shoulder dislocates anteriorly and is then pulled back by infraspinatus and teres minor hitting and breaking a bit off the anterior lip of the glenoid fossa
What are some causes of posterior shoulder dislocation?
Electrocution, epileptic seizure, FOOSH
Although difficult to diagnose on x-ray what sign indicates a posterior shoulder dislocations?
Humeral head appears more like a lightbulb and glenohumeral distance increases
In what types of dislocations of the shoulder are rotator cuff tears most common?
Inferior and posterior dislocations
What age group are most likely to experience clavicle fractures?
Children and young adults
How are clavicle fractures usually treated?
Conservatively using a sling
What position will the affected upper limb be after a clavicle fracture?
Dropped and adducted
What does malunion mean as a fracture healing complication?
Uniting in an suboptimal position
What does non-union mean as a fracture healing complication?
Failure of the two end of break to unite
What is inpingement syndrome?
Where the supraspinatus tendon impinges on the coracobrachialis-acromegaly arch becoming irritated and inflamed
In which movements will pain in inpingement syndrome be worse?
When shoulder is flexed, abducted and over head movements
