Nerve Injuries Flashcards
What are the most common sites for slipped disc?
L4/5
L5/S1
What is piriformis syndrome?
Compression of the sciatic nerve by the priori form is muscle
What are symptoms of piriformis syndrome?
Dull ache in buttock, typical sciatica, pain when walking up stairs, increased pain after prolonged sitting and reduced range of motion of hip
What treatment is used for piriformis syndrome?
Activity modification, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and physio therapy
What movements in the lower limb wouldn’t happen if the sciatic nerve was completely transacted?
No knee flexion, ankle-dorsiflexion or plantar flexion, eversion or inversion of the foot and no movements of the toes
What nerve roots supply the superior gluteal nerve?
L4, L5, S1
What pathological gait will a person with superior gluteal nerve injury have?
Trendelenburg gait
What is meralgia paraesthetica?
Compression of the lateral cutaneous nerve when it travels through either the inguinal ligament or fascia lata
What things can cause meralgia paraesthetica?
Obesity, pregnancy, tight clothing or wearing a tool belt
What are the signs and symptoms of meralgia paraesthetica?
Burning/stinging sensation over anterolateral aspect of thigh which is worse when standing/walking and eased on rest. Tenderness of palpating of trapped nerve and positive Tinel’s sign
Which spinal nerve roots contribute to the femoral nerve?
L2, L3, L4
What action will be weaker/absent with a femoral nerve injury?
Extension of the knee
Which muscles will be paralysed after a tibial nerve injury?
Gastrocnemius and soleus, tibialis posterior
What nerve in the leg can be harvested for nerve graft due to low resulting sensory deficits?
Sural nerve
Which nerve may be injured in a mid-shaft humeral fracture?
Radial nerve (as it runs through radial groove)
