Origin and Insertion of Deltoid
Origin: lateral 1/3 of clavicle; acromion; spine of the scapula
Insertion: deltoid tuberosity
Action of Deltoid All fibers
Abduct the shoulder
Action of Deltoid Anterior Fibers
Flex the shoulder; medially rotate the shoulder; horizontally adduct the shoulder
Actions of Deltoid Posterior Fibers
Extend the shoulder; laterally flex the shoulder; horizontally abduct the shoulder
Origin and Insertion of Trapezius
Origin: external occipital protuberance; medial portion of superior nuchal line; ligamentum nuchae; spinous process of C7 to T12
Insertion: Lateral 1/3 of clavicle; acromion; spine of scapula
Actions of Trapezius Upper Fibers
Bilaterally: extend the head and neck
Unilaterally: laterally flex the head and neck to same side; rotate head and neck to opposite side; elevate the scapula; upwardly rotate the scapula
Actions of Trapezius Middle Fibers
Adduct the shoulder; stabilize the scapula
Actions of Trapezius Lower Fibers
Depress the scapula; upwardly rotate the scapula
Origin and Insertion of Lats
Origin: inferior angle of scapula, thoracolumbar fascia, last 3 or 4 ribs, spinous process of last 6 thoratic vertebrae; posterior iliac crest
Insertion: intertubercular groove of humerus
Actions of Lats
Adduct the shoulder; extend the shoulder; medially rotate the shoulder
Origin and Insertion of Teres Major
Origin: Inferior angle and lower 1/3 of lateral border of scap
Insertion: crest of lesser tubercle of humerus
Actions of Teres Major
Extend; adduct and medially rotate the shoulder
Origin and insertion of subscapularis
Origin: subscapular fossa
Insertion: greater tubercle of humerus
Actions of subscapularis
stabilize the shoulder; abduct the shoulder
Origin and insertion of infraspinatus
Origin: infraspinous fossa
Insertion: greater tubercle of humerus
Actions of infraspinatus
stabilize the shoulder; adduct the shoulder; laterally rotate the shoulder

Origin: upper 2/3 of lateral border of scap
Insertion: greater tubercle of humerus

Origin: subscapularis fossa
Insertion: lesser tubercle of humerus

Origin: spinous process T2 to T5
Insertion: medial border of scap between the spine of scap and inferior angle
Action of rhomboid major
adduct, elevate scap, downwardly rotate scap
Origin and insertion of rhomboid minor
Origin: spinous process of C7 to T1
Insertion: upper portion of the scap; acromion process; spine of the scap
Action of rhomboid minor
adduct, elevate, and downwardly rotate the scap
Origin and insertion of levator scap
Origin: TVPs of 1st through 4th cervical vertebrae
Insertion: medial border of scap between the superior angle and superior portion of spine of scap
Actions of levator scap
Unilaterally: elevate and downwardly rotate the scap, laterally flex the head and neck; rotate the head and neck to same side
Bilaterally: extend the head and neck
Origin and Insertion of serratus anterior
Origin: external surface of upper eight or nine ribs
Insertion: anterior surface of medial border of the scap
Actions of serratus anterior
(with origin fixed): abduct, upwardly rotate, and depress the scap; hold the medial border of the scap against the ribs
Origin and insertion of pec major
Origin: medial 1/2 of clavicle, sternum, and cartilage of 1st through 6th ribs
Insertion: crest of greater tubercle of humerus
Actions of pec major
All fibers: adduct and medially rotate the shoulder
Upper fibers: flex and horizontally adduct the shoulder
Lower fibers: extend the shoulder
Origin and Insertion of pec minor
Origin: 3rd, 4th and 5th ribs
Insertion: medial surface of coracoid process of the scap
Action of pec minor
depress, abduct and downwardly rotate the scap
Origin and insertion of subclavius
Origin: first rib and cartilage
Insertion: inferior surface of middle 1/3 of clavicle
Actions of subclavius
depress the clavicle and draw it anteriorly; elevate the first rib; stabilize the sternoclavicular joint
Origin and Insertion of biceps brachii
Origin: coracoid process and supraglenoid tubercle
Insertion: tuberosity of radius and aponeurosis of the biceps brachii
Actions of biceps brachii
flex the elbow; flex the forearm and supinate the forearm
Origin and Insertion of triceps brachii
Origin: infraglenoid tubercle, posterior surface of proximal 1/2 of humerus, posterior surface of distal 1/2 of humerus
Insertion: olecranon process of ulna

All Heads: extend the elbow
Long Head: extend and adduct the shoulder

Origin: coracoid process of scap
Insertion: medial surface of mid-humeral shaft
