Shoulder actions Flashcards
Trapezius
1) Rotates scapula upward
- Upper: rotates scapula upward
- Middle: retracts (adducts) scapula
- Lower: depresses and upwardly rotates scapula
Latissimus Dorsi
1) Shoulder extension
2) Shoulder IR
3) Shoulder adduction
4) Contributes to scapular depression and retraction (adduction)
Levator Scapulae
1) Elevation of scapula
2) Downward rotation of scapula
Rhomboid Minor
1) Downward rotation of scapula
2) Retraction (adduction of scapula)
3) Elevation of scapula
Rhomboid Major
1) Downward rotation of scapula
2) Retraction (adduction ) of scapula
3) Elevation of scapula
Serratus Posterior Superior
Assists in lifting ribs in inspiration
Serratus Posterior Inferior
Unclear, may hold lower ribs down during inspiration
Serratus Anterior
1) Scapula protraction (abduction)
2) Rotates scapula (glenoid) upward
Deltoid
1) Stabilizes GH joint
- Anterior fibers: shoulder flexion and horizontal adduction
- Middle fibers: shoulder abduction
- Posterior fibers: shoulder extension and horizontal abduction
Subscapularis
1) Stabilizes GH joint
2) Shoulder IR
Supraspinatus
1) Stabilizes GH joint
2) Shoulder abduction
3) Depresses humeral head during abduction
Infraspinatus
1) Stabilizes GH joint
2) Shoulder ER
Teres Minor
1) Stabilizes joint
2) Shoulder ER
Teres Major
1) Shoulder IR
2) Shoulder adduction
3) Shoulder extension
Coracobrachialis
1) Shoulder flexion
2) Shoulder adduction
