Short term N Working Memory Flashcards
Processes involved in retaining, retrieving, and using information about stimuli, events, images, ideas, etc. after the original information is no longer present
Memory
Retention, for brief periods of time, of the effects of sensory information
Sensory memory
The system involved in storing small amounts of information for a brief period of time.
Short term memory or STM
Brief sensory memory for visual stimuli that lasts for a fraction of a second after a stimulus is extinguished.
Iconic memory
Brief sensory memory for auditory stimuli that lasts for a few seconds after a stimulus is extinguished
Echoic memory
Without what does information escape very fast from STM
rehearsal
Writing down digits as soon as they go away
Digit span task (tests short term memory)
Collection of elements that are closely related to each others, but not associated with elements in other chunks
A chunk
Task of memorizing whether squares had changed color or not over a delay when the original had been exposed for a fraction of a second (number of squares determined what capacity we have)
Luck and Vogel
Defined STM capacity in terms of amount of information is in the stimuli
Alvarez and Cavanaugh
Important brain structure responsible for central executive in Working Memory
Prefrontal Cortex
Important brain structure for visuospatial sketch pad
Visual cortex or precipital lobe
A brain structure responsible with creating memories
Hippocampus
A limited capacity system for temporary storage and manipulation of information for complex tasks such as comprehension
Working memory
Capacity for only a few seconds then decays, without rehearsal
Phonological loop
