Short Term Causes Of WW1 Flashcards
What was the Schlieffen plan?
The schlieffen plan was Germany’s war plan if the alliances went to war. It said Germany was to invade France through Belgium and Luxembourg (neutral countries) because of the heavily militarised border. This plan counted on Britain not respecting the British-Belgian Alliance and that Russia would take a long enough time to mobilise so Germany could take France. However, Russia didn’t take long to mobilise, Britain remembered the alliance and Belgium fought back.
Why was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand important?
Because the Austro-Hungarians blamed the Serbian government for backing the Serbian terrorists so Austria-Hungary declared war so Russia who had failed Serbia declared war on Austria-Hungary; because of this Germany enacted the Schlieffen plan so they declared war on France and invaded Belgium and Luxembourg so Britain declared war.
