Protagonist
The main character of the story
Antagonist
Someone/something opposing to the main character
Characterization
The method the author uses to create characters in a literary work
Flat character
Plays a minor role, doesn’t undergo major changes throughout the literary work
Round character
The character often changes throughout the literary work(dynamic)
Conflicts
Struggle that takes place between opposing people, force, and concepts.
- man vs. Man
- man vs self
- man vs nature
-man vs supernatural - man vs society
Flashback
Incident taking place in the memory of a character in the story.
Foreshadowing
When the author gives hints of what will happen later on the story
Genre
A term used to classify different types of forms of literary works.
Ex. “ novel,play,poem, short story”
Irony
1) Verbal- say one thing meaning another
2) Situational- when something happens that you wouldn’t expect to happen
3) Dramatic - the audience knows something the character does this causes tension bc the audience understands the situation better than the character
Point of view
The point in which the story is viewed
1) first person- narrator is the “I” who tell the story
2)3rd person limited-narrator uses “he, she, they” and only provides an outside prospective
3) 3rd person omniscient- you know everything including thought, feelings,
Setting
Refers to the first and the place where the events in the story happen
Theme
The main idea or meaning of the story
