Metaphor
An implied comparison between two unlike thing( without using the words like or as)
Ex. “He’s a dream”
Simile
A direct comparison between two unlike things using like, as, or than.
Ex “as brave as a lion”
Personification
When human qualities or actions are given to sum that isn’t human.
Ex. “The wind whispered to the trees”
Alliteration
The same sound or letter is repeated at the beginning of closely connected words
Ex. “Sally sells seashells by the seashores”
Onomatopoeia
Words that imitate sounds
Ex”buzz” “bang”
Rhyme
The same sound occurring in different words
Ex. “ the cat sat on the mat”
Oxymoron
When two opposite words are put together
Ex. “ bittersweet”
Hyperbole
Exaggerating used not to deceive, but for humours or dramatic effect
Ex. “ she nearly died laughing”
Euphemism
A gentler, more politically correct way of saying something that could be offensive or upsetting.
Ex. “ passed away instead of “dead”
