Short story definition
an invented narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentration on the creation of mood rather than plot.
What makes a short story a “short story”?
Short stories can be read usually in one sitting. (usually 20 min - 1 hr)
Shorter than a novel or a novella.
Types of Short Stories:
Regular Short Story: 1,000 to 7,500 words (on average).
Short Short Story or Flash Fiction” shorter than 1000 words.
Microfiction: Anything shorter than 300 words.
Key Aspects of Short Stories
Setting: Usually simplified to one time and/or place
Characters: One to two main characters introduced to story with little to no background.
Plot: One single plot rather than a main plot with subplots in it too.
Theme: Generally revolve around a common theme, moral lesson, mood, or style.
Literary Style: While shorter they still have and use literary devices (foreshadowing, metaphor, tone, etc.)
