(short) mass spec quiz flashcards (S3.2.8-11)
purpose of mass spec
m/z of a charged particle (charge is usually +1) tells us the total mass of the molecule. Also, m/z of different fragments can tell us what the different pieces of the molecules are (what elements are contained, based on the mass)
purpose of IR spec
IR spec is cheaper, easier, and safer than mass spec. It tells us the type of bonds present (because diff. bonds absorb diff. wavelengths of IR radiation)
purpose of H1NMR spec
proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry can tell us:
1. # diff. chem environments containing protons (# of signals, ignoring the one at 0)
2. type of protons in each chem. env. (based on chemical shift, in ppm, given in data booklet)
3. ratio of the # of protons in each chem. env. (from integration trace)
4. # hydrogens on the adjacent carbon - splitting pattern minus 1
h1nmr x and y axis
x - chemical shift (ppm), y - absorbance
infrared x and y axis
x - wavenumber, y - %transmittance
mass spec x and y axis
x - m/z, y - relative intensity
