Why should we study the Bible?
- We learn about our historical journey
- We get better understanding of God and His works
- We get to know our identity better
- We learn more about the meaning of life
What ways are we to interpret the Bible? Explain both.
Contextual = The words are put into context. We consider the culture, time and place. This approach tries to determine what the authors were saying to the people of their own time. Sometimes we have to ‘interpret’ the passage to understand what the author was saying.
Literal = Refers to the exact meanings, as in dictionary definition. Literal means “every word”. We read the Bible word for word. Every sentence is taken to mean exactly what it says.
What does the Bible mean? How is the Bible divided? How many books in each section?
- The word bible comes from the Greek word ‘biblia’ which means books.
- The bible is divided into 2 the old and new testament.
- There are 73 books in total.
- 46 in the old testament.
- 27 in the new testament.

What are the first five books of the Bible? How do we refer to these books?
- The first five books of the bible are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy
- We refer to these books as the Pentateuch
What does inspiration and innerancy mean?
Inspiration - we believe the Holy Spirit has influenced the Bible’s writers to write only what is true and good.
Inerrancy - we believe that while there are some minor errors in Scripture (dates, names, etc.) there is NO ERROR in the main message.
Why is purgatory necessary for some souls?
Purgatory is the final state of purification after death and before we can enter into heaven. Purgatory is important because we should enter the presence of God cleansed from sin.
What must an individual do to have their soul go to hell?
An individual would have to live a life separate from God and choose to not believe in God and follow His ways.
