List and explain the 5 truths taught in the frist Creation story in Genesis
- There is only one God - The writer makes this point by having one God create all the other gods that people worship: humans, animals, and heavenly bodies. If all those things were created, they cannot be gods.
- God planned creation - The biblical writer potrays God as creating the world in an orderly way, the way a builder or carpenter works. His point is that God planned creation; it did not hppen by chance
- God created everything good - All of creation had goodness because it is by God’s design
- The Sabbath is Holy - God establishes the holiness of creation in the day of rest: Sunday. The biblical writer potrays God as blessing the sventh dau and setting it apart as a special day of rest and of prayer
- Humanity is made in the image of God - God’s goodness is in all of creation. The beauty of creation reflects the beauty of the creator.
List and explain the 3 truths taught through the second Creation story in Genesis
- God cares for humanity and seeks intimacy with us - God is shown creation the body of man and then breathing into it “life-giving breath.” At that moment, the first human being began to live. This shows the close relationship between the first human being and God.
- God cares for creation and shares power and responsibility with us - God gave human beings control over the animals. God shared with them his own power. With God given free will, we have a responsibility as part of ongoing creation.
- God values the equality of humans and our relationship with one another - God values all human being equally (male and female, nations to nations). The biblical author lived in a society controlled by men. That society controlled by men. That society considered woman to be second-class citizens. By potraying women as coming from the same material as man, the biblical writer teaches that men and women are equal in dignity.
List and explain the different forms of sin/de-creation
Mortal Sin - Are serious sins that destroy our very ability to love and our relationship with God. This sin turns man away from God.There are 3 things that happen in order for it to be considered as a mortal sin. It must be of a grave matter (ex. murder, adultery, rape, violence against your parents). It must be committed with full knowledge that it is a mortal sin.( you know that what you are doing is wrong). It must be committed with full consent. ( you choose to do it ).
Venial Sin - Choices that we make that wound our very ability to love. Venial sin weakens charity.(ex. Swearing, telling your parents you have no homework when you do, telling white lies). Venial sin does not break our relationship with God.
Sin of Commision - is when we do something that we shouldn’t do that goes contrary to the will of God. It is when we “commit” a wrong deed.(ex.lying, gossipping, theft, adultery or other sexual sins). This is the type of sin in which we are most familiar with.
Sin of Omission - the failure to do something whether intentional or not. (ex. failure to help another person, failure to attend mass or pray regularly).
Describe the 3 different affects sin has on relationships taught in the story of Adam and Eve
- Sin Divides People From Themselves - after sinning a change takes place in our consciousness. We are no longer at ease with ourselves. Sin changes us. It makes us less able to love as God wants us to.
- Sin Divides People From God - When we sin, we too are ashamed and experience guilt. We try to avoid God when we are burdened with sin.
- Sin Divides People From Nature - Nature causes us to labour and sweat. Our bodies are no longer under our control; they are controlled by pain and death.
Describe the 2 affects sin has on relationships as taught in the story of Cain and Abel and Noah and the Flood
- Sin Divides People from Each Other - The story teaches that when people break faith with God, they soon break faith with one another as well.
- Sin Leads to the Destruction of Ourselves and Our World - A decrease in life spans suggests an increase in sin. They show sin increasing from generation to generation.
Describe the 1 affect sin has on relationships as taught in the story of the Tower of Babel
- Sin divides Nation from Nation - The writer of this story uses the tower as a symbol of people’s pride, of their desire to “make a name for themselves” and become “like God”.
