Short Answer Questions Flashcards

1
Q

Stellar Evolution (life of a star from start to end)

A
  1. Molecular Cloud (hydrogen)
    + debris from a supernova
    2.Protostar (clusters in nebula)
    + temperature rises
  2. Fusion begins (hydrogen atoms collide and make helium atoms and energy)
  3. Main sequence star
    - loses hydrogen
  4. Old age star (Giant/Red Giant) (gros in size to die)
    - loses mass and gas
  5. Fizzle into planetary nebula
  6. Turns into white dwarf (leftover core) or if the star was big then it turns into supernova or blackhole

Q

What is the nitrogen cycle (explain the cycle)

A

Nitrogen is found in plants and transferred to animals when plants are consumed. Nitrogen is then used by the animal to make the food they consume into proteins. When animals die and decompose, nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert the left over nitrogen (as well as some nitrogen found in the atmosphere) into nitrate/ammonia for plants to be able to absorb it. Another way plants can absorb nitrogen is by the haber process. This process artificially converts the nitrogen into ammonia to be used in fertilizers. Then the cycle repeats

Q

What is a food web?

A

A food web is a more accurate way to represent the energy flow in an ecosystem between multiple complex food chains. This is shown/illustrated by drawings that represent organisms and arrows to show the direction in which the energy is flowing from one organism to the other.

Q

What is the formula for electrical energy usage?

A

Energy is measured in kWh
Time is measured in hours (h)
Power is measured in kW
Formula for power: kW=kWh/h
FORMULA FOR ELECTRICAL POWER USAGE: kWh: kWh/h x h or kWh=kWh

Q

What is the HR diagram?

A

The HR diagram illustrates the relationship between the star’s temperature (color) and luminosity (brightness) and absolute magnitude. It also shows the evolutionary stages of stars.
