what is a weed?
any plant that is growing where you don’t want it to grow
what do weeds do?
disfigure lawns and gardens, interfere with crop production, reduce visibility along roads, poison livestock or humans, compete with other plants.
whats the main reason weeds are controlled?
- improve the appearance of lawns and flower beds
- aesthetic appeal
what makes up a well kept lawn?
uniform texture and colour
annual weed
germinate, bloom, produce seeds and dies in one growing season
winter annual weed
germinate, and produce a leafy rosette in the fall and then blooms, seeds and dies the following summer
Biennial weeds
germinates and produces a leafy rosette during their first growing season and then flowers, complete their life cycle and dies during the next.
Perennial (Herbaceous)
lives a number of years, developing each year from underground stems, roots or crowns and usually flowering each year but dying back to the ground each winter
Perennial (woody)
weedy trees, shrubs and vines that live for many years. producing new growth each year from their above ground stems, branches and twigs (sometimes underground stems, roots or crowns)
which weeds are hardest to get rid of and why?
perennial because they spread by seed and their underground root system has to be destroyed.
when should control measures be taken for annual, winder and biennial weeds?
before they seed or offer too much competition
