Shore supply
Intro
All RN ships can:
-receive power from shore supply.
-receive power from another ship.
-provide power to another ship or shoreside.
This can accomplished using shore supply boxes:
-number of boxes determined by ship size.
-Ampere rating determined by domestic supply requirements.
Connecting shore supply (9 steps)
- Send signal to port.
- Raise permit to work.
- Rack out Breakers
- Prove box ‘dead’
- Obtain Castel key
- Test shore supply cables
- Bring on and secure cables
- Connect cables
- Inform dockyard.
Castel Key
Just a interlocked key for something that will be off limits or is dangerous. ( looks similar to the electrical box key)
Connecting cables requirement
After conducting the dead tests on the cables they can be connected to the shore supply box on board.

Phase connections MUST BE CORRECT.

Requirements
Earthing for shore supply
The ship must be earthed: - to the jetty - to the ship along side -at two points NOT LESS THAN half the ships length apart. Gangways are also to be earthed.
Connecting shore supply to ships distribution system
After shore power is switched on but before connecting to the ship:
•Check voltage and frequency
•Check stability if supply
•Check proper connection of cables.
