What are the dangers of carbon monoxide, and what are some ways to prevent exposure in the shop?
Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, harmful and deadly.
To prevent exposure, use exhaust extractors, or run the vehicle outside.
Why is it important to use designated impact sockets (black impact sockets) when using an impact gun, and not chromium sockets?
Chromium sockets can be damaged when used on the impact gun.
There are two types of radiator fans. What are they, and why can they be dangerous?
Electric and belt driven.
Electric fans can turn on even when the vehicle is off, so they can be potential pinch points/rotating equipment.
Note: pull the battery terminals off when working on this equipment.
There are multiple burn hazards on a vehicle; where are they?
Engine coolant (could be under pressure; 100C)
Exhaust manifold (1000C)
Catalytic converter (VERY HOT)
Any time fuel containments/systems are exposed a fire could potential start; what are some tricks to prevent a fire in the shop.
- disconnect the negative battery
- keep sparks away
- always be cautious
- have a fire extinguisher nearby and updated at all times
- use special lights (use LEDs or cooler running fluorescents)
What are some rules when parking vehicles in the shop?
Always put automatic vehicles in park and manual vehicles in neutral with the e brake engaged.
What type of drills/impact guns should you use in an auto shop, and why?
Use air impact or brushless motor impact/drill guns. The others could ignite fuel vapors.
