What is feudalism?
It is the dominant idea of social classes and hierarchies.
Who is Emperor Go-Shirakawa?
He was 77th emperor, he spent most of his days restoring and building temples. He was also Buddhist priest.
Who is Emperor Nijo?
He was 78th emperor, was also a very religious person being buddhist.
Who is Minamoto Yoshitomo?
Minamoto Yoshitomo lead the Minamoto clan in the back end of the Heian period, his son became the first shogun.
Who is Taira Kiyomori?
Taira Kiyomori lead the Taira clan in the back end of the Heian period but was defeated by Minamoto forces.
Who is Minamoto Yoritomo?
He was the very first shogun of Japan.
What is a shoen?
It was the scheme where a person could have land, but would have to give some of their produce to the daimyo.
What is a shugo?
The shugos were government officials appointed to supervise posts.
Who were Jito?
Jito were people who were employed to look after someone’s land.
What was the Kamakura bakufu?
They were the feudal military government of Japan during the Kamakura period from 1185 to 1333.
Who were the 3 unifiers?
Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
What did Oda Nobunaga do?
He overthrew the Ashikaga (or Muromachi) shogunate (1338–1573) and ended a long period of feudal wars by unifying half of the provinces in Japan.
What did Toyotomi Hideyoshi do?
He reorganized the social class system, instigated tax reforms, built castles, restored temples.
What did Tokugawa Ieyasu do?
He created the tokugawa shogunate.
When were the mongol invasions?
1274 and 1281

It is a mental state of relaxation, understanding and peace.
What is satori?
It is the experience of enlightenment.
What is shi-no-ko-sho?
The classes of Japan. Shi - warriors

It opened trade with American vessels in some Japanese ports, protection for American sailors and vessels in Japan.
