Shock Flashcards
What is shock?
Acute failure of the CVS to adequately perfuse tissues and supple oxygen
Symptoms of shock
cold/sweaty/clammy skin, rapid and weak pulse, decreased pulse pressure, rapid and shallow breathing, decreased urine output, altered consciousness
Hypovolemic Shock (low SV)
Decreased blood volume due to hemorrhage, diarrhea, and vomitting
Cariogenic Shock (low SV)
Pump failure, due to MI or arrhythmias
Obstructive Shock (low SV)
Obstruction to blood flow, due to major pulmonary embolism, cardiac tamponade, or tension pneumothorax
Septic Shock (vasodilation)
decreased TPR due to endotoxins
Anaphylactic shock (vasodilation)
Deceased TPR due to allergic reaction (histamine release)
Neurogenic (vasodilation)
Disruption of the neurogenic vasomotor control, due to major brain or spinal cord injury
Short term response to hemorrhage
Baroreceptor reflex to perserve perfusion of the heart and brain
Long term response to hemorrhage
Activation of the renin-angiotensin system used to replace fluid loss
