Shock Flashcards
shock
hypoperfusion and/or cellular anaerobic conditions
sudden drop in blood flow through body
types of shock
hypovolemia
cardiogenic
distributive
hypoxic
obstructive
hypovolemic shock
severe blood or fluid loss, heart unable to pump blood
parvo, foreign body
cardiogenic shock
problem in heart, unable to pump properly
DCM, anything damaging myocardium
distributive shock
dilation and constriction of vessels not responding properly
hear stroke, sepsis
hypoxic shock
impaired oxygen delivery to cells
anemia, CO poisoning, respiratory disease
obstructive shock
blood prevented from returning to heart (rare)
emergency
blood clot, collapsed lung, pericardial effusion
hyperlactemia pathogenesis
low oxygen –> can’t produce ATP –> anaeorbic respiration –> pyruvate –> lactic acid build up
signs of shock
lethargy
pale mm (or very red if distributive)
poor pulses
high (dogs) or low HR (cats)
collapse
cold extremities
bloated abdomen (obstructive)
increased lactate
metabolic acidosis
GDV
twisted stomach
compressed vena cava –> reduced blood flow back to heart –> shock
