sheila quotes Flashcards

1
Q

“Mummy”, “Daddy”

A

Colloquialisms. She lives in a bubble, she can’t see the harsh realities of life and this seems to juxtapose Eva who has lost both parents.
~ This changes to “Mother” and “Father” later in the play as Sheila now comes into conflict with her parents.

Q

“If she had been some miserable plain little creature, I don’t suppose I’d have done it. But she is as very pretty and looked as if she could take care of herself. I couldn’t be sorry for her”

A

Dehumanising Eva through “Creature” further segregates the classes at the beginning of the play. Eva represents the sin of “Envy” through her immature and spiteful behaviour.

Q

“They’re not cheap labour, they’re people”

A

Foreshadows her subconscious which clearly believes in Socialism but is hidden under the guise of pressures for Mr and Mrs Birling.
- But, the wording still shows an air of detachment through “They”

Q

“Mother, Stop it!”

A

She contrasts with Mrs Birling once she realised the actions or the Upper Class are immoral. She thinks it’s ridiculous to put on airs and graces and try to defy the inspector.
The Oedipus Complex (Challenging the authority of the same sex parent) metaphorically represents the conflict between Labour and Conservative and Socialism and Capitalism.
