Sheffield Flooding Flashcards
How much rain fell over Sheffield on the 15th June?
90mm
Why do antecedent conditions cause flooding?
The saturation of the ground due to prolonged rain makes the ground no longer absorb the water allowing more surface run off making the discharge of water rise
How much rain fell on the 25th of June?
100mm
Where does Sheffield lie?
- At the bottom of 7 hills
- At the foot of the Pennines where rivers Rivelin, Loxley and Don meet.
Why does urbanisation cause flooding?
Surfaces are concrete, brick and tarmac which are all impermeable so water can not be absorbed into it causing a higher discharge
Why does deforestation cause flooding?
Because the lack of vegetation means less interception of rain so there is more surface run off and discharge
Why does being at the bottom of 7 hills cause flooding?
The steep gradient of the seven hills it lies at the bottom of means more and quicker surface run off causing floods
What does discharge mean?
The amount of water
Why does being at the foot of the Pennines cause flooding?
During heavy periods of rain, the rivers that meet there can flood through Sheffield as their discharges rise
What three human factors cause flooding?
- Urbanisation
- Land use change
- Deforestation
