SHC Flashcards
What is specific heat capacity
The energy required to raise the temperature of a substance by 1 degree Celsius for each 1kg
What’s the SHC of water
4200J/Kg degrees C
Formula to find the energy needed
(And units and simplified version)
Energy needed = mass x SHC x temp. Change
🔺E = mc🔺(theta(actually temp change))
J, Kg, J/Kg degrees C, degrees C
What does a triangle represent in a formula
Change in
If the energy and mass remain the same, what happens to the SHC if the temp change is greater
It’s lower
What is internal energy
The sum of the kinetic and potential energies of all the particles in a substance.
Kinetic - temp
Potential energies - state in
5 steps to use the gradient to find the SHC on a graph
- Find two far away points on your line (LINE NOT THE POINTS)
- Make into a right angled triangle
- Find the change in y and change in x using the SCALE
- Gradient = change in y/change in x or
y2-y1/x2-x1 - Gradient = 1 / mc ~> c= 1 / m x gradient
