Hooke’s Law Flashcards
What is Hooke’s law
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applied
What is extension
How much longer the spring is compared to its original length
What does directly proportional mean
As one quantity increases, the other increases at the same rate
What is the limit of proportionality?
- graph stops being proportional
- spring has reached its elastic limit
- spring will not return to the original shape when the force is removed
What are the two ‘regions’ on a graph before and after the limit of proportionality?
Elastic and plastic
How do you find the energy stored on a graph showing the limit of proportionality
Find the area of the elastic region
bxh/2
N on the bottom of the triangle, m on the side
MAKE SURE TO SHOW WHERE THE LIMIT OF PROPORTIONALITY IS TO MAKE IT EASIER
What is elastic behaviour
Object will return to its original shape once the load is removed
What is inelastic/plastic behaviour
Object will not return to its original shape once the load is removed
What is spring constant (k)
How many newtons it would take to increase the length of the object by one meter
What is deformation? What are the two types?
The change in an objects shape
Elastic + inelastic
Same as elastic + plastic behaviour
