Shapes & Polarity (Test 2) Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the properties of shapes & polarity
A
- COVALENT MOLECULAR ONLY
- Has VSPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) theory states that the electron pairs are arranged as far apart as possible.
- A lone pair has greater repulsion ability than a bonding pair.
2
Q
How many shapes are there & name them.
A
There are 5 shapes:
- Linear
- V-shape or Bent
- Trigonal Planar
- Pyramidal
- Tetrahedral
3
Q
Properties of linear
A
Molecules with only 2 areas of bonding pairs of electrons around the central atom will be linear.
E.g. O2, F2
4
Q
Properties of Trigonal Planar
A
3 pairs of electrons around the central atom.
E.g. BF3
5
Q
Properties of Pyramidal
A
4 pairs of electrons around the central atom BUT one pair is lone pair.
E.g. NH3
6
Q
Properties of Tetrahedral
A
4 bonding pairs of electrons around the central atom.
E.g. CH4
7
Q
Properties of V-shape or Bent
A
4 pairs of electrons around the central atom BUT 2 are lone pairs.
E.g. Water (H2O)
