shapes of molecules and ions Flashcards
explain electron pair repulsion theory ?
pairs of electrons repel so the electron pairs around the central atom will make themselves as far apart as possible
two pair of electrons?
linear , 180 apart max
three pairs of electron ?
trigonal planar ,120 apart
four pairs of electrons ?
tetrahedral,109.5 . 3 dimensial so the angles can add up to more than 360
what does a wedge represent ?
a bond coming out of a paper
what does a dashed line represent ?
a bond going into the paper
five pairs of electrons ?
triganol bi pyramid ,90 ,120
six pairs of electrons ?
octahedral ,bond angle 90
how do lone pairs effect shape ?
not involved in bonding but still involved in repulsion
explain repulsion of lone pairs of electrons.
repulsion between lone pairs and bonding pairs is greater then that of 2 bonding pairs . 2 lone pairs have to strongest repulsion . bond angles decrease by 2
