3
Q

how do metals bond ?

A

The outer main levels merge so the outer electrons are no longer associated with one particular atom .It’s a lattice of positive ions living in a sea of negative electrons .

Q

what structures do metals have and why ?

A

metallic bonding spreads throughout so metals have giant structures

7
Q

are metals good conductors of electricity ? explain your answer

A

yes as the delocalised electrons can move through the structure .an electron from the negative terminal of the supply joins the electron sea at the end of the metal wire while at the same time a different electron leaves the wire at a positive terminal .

Q

are metals good conductors of heat ? explain your answer

A

yes . They have high thermal conductivity .sea of electrons is partially responsible . Energy can spread due to the vibrations caused by the closley packed ions .

Q

what does the strength of a metallic bond depend on ?

A

the charge on the ion . The greater the charge , the more electrons and therefor the stronger the electrostatic attraction between the positive ions and the negative electrons
size of ion -the smaller the ion , the closer the electrons are to the positive nucleus and the stronger the bond .

Q

do metals tend to be strong or weak ?

A

strong , the delocalised sea of electrons mean their are no bonds to break .

Q

why are metals malleable and ductile ?

A

after a small distortion , each ion is in the exact same as environment as before so the shape is maintained

Q

do metals have high melting and boiling point ? explain your answer

A

high because they have giant structures . Their is strong attraction between metal ions and the delocalised sea of electrons
