Shapes Of Molecules Flashcards
What two things can change the shape of a molocule?
-Total number of bonding pairs and lone pairs around the central atom.
How much further do lone pairs repel from the other electron pairs than bonding pairs?
2-2.5 degrees.
How do you work out the number of bonding pairs and lone pairs in a molocule?
-find group number of the cetral atom.
-Add the group number and number of bonds and then take away the charge to get the number of electrons.
-Divide the number of electrons by 2 to find the pairs of electrons.
-Take away the pairs of electrons from the number of bond pairs to find the number of lone pairs.
