SHAPE OF DNA Flashcards
DNA is?
double stranded (which are twisted around each other creating a “double helix” similar to a twisted ladder
what is each DNA strand made up of?
nucleotides, connected through chemical bonds
what are the “rungs” of the ladder made from?
complementary pairs E.G.
A+T
G+C
what are the “sides” of the ladder made from?
alternating sugar and phosphate groups (this is called the sugar - phosphate backbone)
what are the nucleotides joined together by?
covalent bonds -> these are very strong
what are the two strands joined together by?
hydrogen bonds -> these are very weak
weak hydrogen bonds allows:
strands to be superstar during DNA replication and protein synthesis without destroying the DNA completely
where is DNA in eukaryotic cells (e.g. animal cells)?
Nucleus
what does DNA code for?
protein synthesis, replicate cell division, growth, transferring genetic information
why is the nucleus the control centre?
it dictates what occurs and what replicates
