What is shaken baby syndrome?

A

-group of signs and symptoms resulting from violent shaking and impacting of the head of an infant or small child
-neurological changes due to destruction of brain cells
caused by trauma, lack of O2 to brain cells, swelling of the brain

1200-1400 cases/year in US
1 of 4 babies die each yr
avg age of 6-8 mo.
more common in kids at of below poverty lvl.

A
  • head rotates about the neck uncontrollably
  • pitches the brain back and forth w/in the skull
  • brain may strike the skull causing bruising and bleeding
  • damage is greater when shaking ends on impact
