What is shaken baby syndrome?
A
-group of signs and symptoms resulting from violent shaking and impacting of the head of an infant or small child
-neurological changes due to destruction of brain cells
caused by trauma, lack of O2 to brain cells, swelling of the brain

Epidemiology
A
1200-1400 cases/year in US 1 of 4 babies die each yr avg age of 6-8 mo. more common in kids at of below poverty lvl. more common in kids under 1 yr.

Perpetrator
A
- ages in 65-90% of cases…typically not dad
- in females, babysitters or daycare..mother is less common

How much force?
A
typically lasts <20sec
-requires adult size person to induce severe force

what happens when they are shaken?
A
- head rotates about the neck uncontrollably
- pitches the brain back and forth w/in the skull
- brain may strike the skull causing bruising and bleeding
- damage is greater when shaking ends on impact

What are the effects of SBS
A
- partial-total blindness
- hearing loss
- seizures
- developmental delays
- impaired intellect
- speech and learning difficulties
- Trouble w/ memory and attention
- Severe intellectual disability
- CP

What are the 5 S’s?
A
- Shushing
- Side/stomach positioning
- Sucking
- Swaddling
- Swinging gently
