SG 6-10 Flashcards
Explain Coriolis effect.
It is the apparent curving of the path of winds and ocean currents due to the earths rotation.
How is global warming caused by the greenhouse effect?
An increase of greenhouse effects in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases absorb thermal energy in the atmosphere.
Polar easterlies?
Cold, article air over U.S., Wind belts that extend from the presto 60 latitude in both hemispheres.
Westerlies?
Carry moist air through U.S.
Wind belts between 30-60 latitude in both hemispheres.
Trade winds?
Traders used winds to travel from Europe to America
Blow 30 latitude to almost equator in both hemispheres
Doldrums?
Very little wind, means dull, sluggish
Trade winds that meet in area around equator
Horse lattitudes?
Horses thrown overboard
30 N and 30 S
Jet streams?
Narrow belts of high speed winds in upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.
How does wind move in regards to high and low pressure areas?
Cold air sinks ( high pressure), warm air rises (low pressure)
How are winds named?
For the direction from which they blow?
