Second order of performance (DGO 5.01)
Officers may use force in the performance of their duties to
Prevent the commission of a public offense
Prevent a person from injuring him or herself
Effect the lawful arrest or detention of persons resisting or evading such arrest or detention
In self-defense or the defense of another
First Order of Performance (DGO 2.01)
Rules of conduct are:
Protect life and property
Preserve the peace
Prevent crime
Enforce criminal laws and ordinances
Regulate non criminal conduct as provided by law
While on duty devote my entire time to the achievement of this mission
Third order of performance (DGO 5.01)
The categories of force to employ in ascending order of gravity are: Verbal persuasion Physical control Liquid chemical agent Carotid restraint Department issued baton Firearm
Fourth order of performance (DGO 5.02)
An officer may discharge a firearm in the following circumstances:
In necessary defense of him or herself when in danger of death or serious bodily injury
To make an arrest when reasonable cause exists to believe
The suspect has committed or attempted to commit a felony
Involving the use or threatened use of deadly force
When substantial risk exists that subject will cause death or serious bodily injury if apprehension is delayed
Only after other reasonable means of apprehension have been exhausted
To kill a dangerous or wounded animal
To give alarm or call for help when no other means exist
