Sexualtiy And Identity Flashcards
SOCIOLOGIST- MARY MCINTOSH
McIntosh states the role of homosexual male involves certain expect expectations and cultural characteristics.
She says the role of a homosexual male may include feminine characteristics and attention to appearance.
She argues once a male has accepted the homosexual label, he will start to fulfil these characteristics and act upon them.
SOCIOLOGIST-RICH
Argues that women’s sexuality is oppressed by men in a patriarchal society through institutions such as marriage, sexual violence and rape.
She uses the term “compulsory heterosexuality” to describe the way women are socialised into a heterosexual role making sure they are available to men and that women aren’t always heterosexual but it is forced upon them.
She also argues that lesbian identity has been written out of existence and painted as abnormal as it is a threat to male dominance and gives women too much power.
SOCIOLOGIST-PLUMMER
Plummer partially supports mcintoshs idea, seeing homosexuality as a process discussing the “homosexual career” which is where a male who has accepted the label of homosexual will seek other out and join subcultures in which stereotypical characters is become the norm.
These studies show that it is not actually sexual attraction that creates the “homosexual” but the acceptance and internalisation of the identity “homosexual”.
