Ethnicity And Identity Flashcards
SOCIOLOGIST-HEWITT
Hewitt talks about “multiculturalism” and how equality have been designed to get inequality in society.
He said because of this white working class communities see this as unfair to the white community as it puts them under more pressure to get to get jobs as they feel ethnic minorities are favoured and get special treatment.
An identity is then formed amongst themselves which creates tension between ethnic groups.
SOCIOLOGIST-MODOOD
Modood believes that generations feel differently about identity.
Second generation ethnic minorities feel they have more of a British identity than their parents due to the fact that they have integrated into British society from a younger age in schools and they find it much easier to follow British norms/ values as it has always been part of their everyday life
They will have also learn the British language from birth and will use it more frequently then their parents or grandparents
SOCIOLOGIST-GILROY
Gilroy looked at the identity of young black peoples and said that they shared experiences of racism and powerlessness.
He said they crest their own identity called the “black Atlantic” showing it is not rooted in the uk.
SOCIOLOGIST-SPENCER
Spencer found many ethnic minorities are white mainly from Eastern Europe.
He said they face similar issues of resentment and racism which results in them not spending time socialising with the British people as they think that “they do not let other in their circles”.
This then results in Eastern European people sticking together to form their own identity as they feel British people do not welcome them into the ire groups.
SOCIOLOGIST- CASHMORE AND TRYONA
Cashmore and Troyana argue that ethnic minorities “turn inwards” to support each other as a form of protection. Therefore this strengthens culture, religion and identity.
Winston james further supports this in saying experiences of racism unifies cultures and brings them together.
SOCIOLOGIST-JACOBSON
Jacbson further supports Cashmore snd Troyana and Spencer as he says young Muslims form a strong identity as a response to the exclusion they feel from the rest of society.
This effects their diet, religion and how they dress.
They then form a completely different Identity to others in the UK and leads to the British people removing themselves away from the ethnic group which creates a divide.
