Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Flashcards
What is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and what are its main symptoms?
HPV is the most common viral STI. Symptoms include genital warts (low-risk strain) and pre-cancerous lesions that may lead to certain types of cancers (high-risk strain).
How is HPV tested, and what are the available treatments and preventive measures?
Testing: Pap smear in women
Cure: none
Prevention: Gardasil vaccine
What is Genital Herpes/Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), and what are the two types?
Genital herpes is an STI caused by HSV. There are two types: HSV-1 (causes oral and some genital infections) and HSV-2 (causes most genital infections).
What are the main symptoms of Genital Herpes, and how is it tested and treated?
Sores, headache, fever, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, difficult urination;
Testing: tissue scraping or blood test
Cure: antiviral medication (symptom relief).
What are the types of hepatitis, and how are they contracted?
- Hepatitis A: contracted by drinking water contaminated with fecal matter
- Hepatitis B: contracted through sexual contact or contact with bodily fluids or blood (considered STI)
- Hepatitis C: blood-to-blood contact or infected needles
What are the main symptoms of Hepatitis B
Most cases are asymptomatic. Other symptoms include sores on the genitals or mouth, headache, fever, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and difficult urination.
How is HIV transmitted and what are the symptoms of the progression to AIDS?
HIV can be transmitted through sexual contact, pregnancy & childbirth, and injection drug use. Symptoms of progression to AIDS include night sweats, fever, cough, diarrhea, mouth lesions, headaches, fatigue, blurred vision, weight loss, and skin rashes.
What are the bacterial STIs mentioned and their incubation periods?
Chlamydia: 2-12 days
Gonorrhoea: 1-14 days
Syphilis: 10-90 days
What are the common symptoms of Chlamydia?
Usually asymptomatic. Other symptoms include abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis, pain during sex (females), and burning during urination (males).
What are the common symptoms of Gonorrhoea?

Describe the stages of Syphilis and their symptoms.
Primary Stage: painless chancre sore on genitals, lips, anus, or other area of direct contact; lasts 1-5 weeks
Secondary Stage: skin rashes across the body; lasts 2-6 weeks
Late Stage: neurological issues, paralysis, blindness, joint damage, impotency, aneurysm, and tumors
