Sexual Variations (Ch. 9) Flashcards
Paraphilia
Any intense and persistent sexual interest other
than sexual interest in genital stimulation or preparatory fondling with phenotypically normal, physically mature, consenting human partners.
Paraphilic Disorder
A paraphilia that causes DISTRESS or impairment to
the individual or that may harm others when acted
upon.
Courtship Disorders
A group of paraphilias and paraphilic disorders that
have in common distorted components of human
courtship behaviours or behaviours that are typical at the beginning of what could develop into a
romantic relationship.
voyeuristic, exhibitionistic, frotteuristic disorders
Algolagnic Disorders
Group of paraphilic disorders that involve pain
and suffering.
sexual masochism, sexual sadism
Voyeuristic Disorder
Recurrent and intense sexual arousal from observing an unsuspecting person who is naked in the process of disrobing, or engaging in sexual activity (6+ months, minimum age of 18)
Anomalous target preferences
Directed at humans: pedophilic disorder
Directed elsewhere: fetishistic disorder, transvestic disorder
Exhibitionistic Disorder
Recurrent and intense sexual arousal from the exposure of one’s genitals to an unsuspecting person (6+ months)
The person’s reaction is reinforcing
Masturbation usually takes place while in the act of confronting someone
Hope for a positive reaction: most wanted the other person to want to have intercourse with them, 20% did not need a reaction, 15% wanted the other person to display their genitals as well, 14% wanted admiration, 12% wanted any reaction, 4% wanted anger or disgust
Frotteuristic disorder
Recurrent and intense sexual arousal from touching or rubbing against a non-consenting person (6+ months)
Largely unnoticed, usually happens in crowded places
Difference between a Kink and a Sexual Disorder
Kinks are consensual and informed (safely practicing BDSM) and sexual disorders are not
Sexual Sadism Disorder
recurrent and intense sexual arousal from the physical or psychological suffering of another person
-Goals are to gain power and humiliate
-Harms others and is non-consensual
Sexual Masochism Disorder
is based on recurrent and intense sexual arousal from the act of being humiliated, beaten, bound, or otherwise made to suffer
- Acted out alone or with a partner
Fetishistic Disorder
Recurrent and intense sexual arousal from either the use of non-living objects or a highly specific focus on a non-genital body part (6+ months)
Erotic Asphyxiation
Intentional restriction of oxygen to the brain for the purpose of sexual arousal
Paraphilic Infantilism
Sexual arousal derived from dressing up like a baby or being treated like one
cuckoldism/cuckqueaning/troilism
Sexual pleasure derived from seeing one’s partner engage in sexual activity with another person/s, or from knowing that one’s partner is having an affair
