sexual reproduction (plants) Flashcards
why do we need a sexual mode of reproduction? (2 points)
- sexual mode of reproduction allows more variations, which ultimately is useful for the survival of species.
- sexual mode of reproduction also creates combinations of different varieties of the same species, which adds more variation to their offspring causing a faster move towards evolution.
where are the reproductive parts of a plant located?
in its flower.
what are the male and female reproductive parts of a plant?
female: carpel/pistil
male: stamen
what are unisexual flowers? (with examples)
unisexual flowers are flowers that contain either only a stamen or only a pistil. eg. papaya, watermelon.
what are bisexual flowers? (with examples)
bisexual flowers are flowers that contain both the stamen and the pistil in the flower. eg. hibiscus, mustard.
what are the main components of the stamen?
the stamen contains-
- produced pollen grains (yellow sticky grains)
-anther (top)
-filament (long tube)
what are the main components of a pistil?
the pistil contains-
-stigma (top)
-style (tube)
-ovary (bottom)
by what is the male germ cell produced in a flower?
it is produced at the stamen, by the pollen grains.
by what is the female germ cell (ovule) produced?
it is produced by the ovary, which contains the ovules in which the egg cells are present.
what is fertilization in plants?
fusion of germ cells in both.
what is formed after the fusion of both germ cells in the plant?
a zygote.
what is pollination?
for fertilization to take place, the pollen from the anther has to be transferred to the pistil. this process is called pollination.
