stimulates follicle to burst & release egg - causes formation of corpus luteum ; secreting oestrogen & progesterone

- causes endometrium to thicken with blood vessels filling with fluids & nutrients ; nourishing embryo

- provides stable environment ; reducing temperature fluctuations
- allows foetus to move freely
- lubricates vagina ; reducing friction at birth

- nutrients & oxygen diffuse into foetal blood and are carried along the umbilical vein
- CO2 & metabolic wastes are carried along the umbilical artery
- allows maternal antibodies to diffuse from maternal blood to foetal blood
