Sexual Orientation Flashcards
Black box:
refers to a human trait we observe, study, and measure but we don’t know why we have it or why it’s there like what genes formed it and what hormones made it remains unclear
ex: skin color, blood type, eye color, height, cancer, athletic ability, skin tone
Stable dimorphism:
When it’s there, it’s there. In place for good expressed behavior, know only if demonstrated.
What are the two basic types of orientations:
- 90% majority orientation *very few both ways
- 10% minority orientation *social pressure
- Trait itself is not a behavior, just a characteristic, built in nervous system, way we are wired.
What is neither orientation:
not a disease or illness
neither orientation is chosen by the individual
When is orientation defined?
at the latest two years, even maybe before birth
What do monozygotic twins have:
identical genes, have 50% higher than average chance of sharing same orientation
Minority orientation:
exists more in males than females
-one trait is handedness (majority orientation is right-handed
Sexual orientation:
directionally of ones sexual interests
-heterosexual-other sex
homosexual- same sex
bisexual- both sex
homosexuality :
erotic attraction and interest in forming romantic relationships with members of own sex
What causes homosexuality:
nature or nurture?
” a naturally occurring minority” in the majority they don’t “get it” because they have never had to.
- absent father
- dominant mother
- early childhood abuse
- distribution of sexual orientation is spread out
Kinsley scale:
scale to test your orientation to either homosexual or heterosexual
0 6
heterosexual-> homosexual
like heterosexual….
most gay people have a gender identity that is consistent with their anatomical sex
what do social norms do?
doesn’t change the orientation of how the person feels
Repression:
reduces only expression not the trait itself
the bible says…
“there is no universal truth” you cant expect everyone to believe the same way
