What is the treatment for trichomonas vaginalis?
Oral metranidazole 400mg bd for 7 days or 2g stat
What is the characteristic description of discharge with bacterial vaginitis infection?
Watery, thin, white, fishy-smelling discharge
What is the treatment for bacterial vaginitis?
Oral metranidazole 400mg bd for 7 days or 2g stat
What is the characteristic description of discharge with candidiasis infection?
Thick, clumpy, white, ‘cottage-cheese like’ discharge. Itchy
What is the treatment for candidiasis?
Topical clotrimazole or oral fluconazole.
Do not need to treat asymptomatic male partners
What is the treatment for chlamydia infection?
Doxycycline 100mg for 7 days and azithromycin 1g stat. Notify and treat partners
What are some possible complications of neonatal chlamydia infection that has been passed on from the mother?
Chlamydial ophthalmia neonatorum, resp infections, otitis media
How is gonorrhoea managed?
Stat one-off doses of IM cetriaxone 500mg and azithromycin 1g.
Test of cure with culture after 72 hours or NAAT after 2 weeks following treatment.
Notify and treat partners
Which strain of Herpes Simplex Virus tends to cause genital herpes?
HSV-2.
HSV-1 can also cause it but more associated with facial herpes/cold-sores
What is the treatment for herpes simplex virus infection?
Oral aciclovir, valaciclovir or famciclovir
What medication should pregnant women with HSV-2 infection be offered?
Prophylactic oral aciclovir tds from 36 weeks gestation
How are genital warts managed?
Topical cream (not safe for pregnancy): podophyllotoxin if warts are soft, imiquimod if warts are hard Ablative therapy: cryotherapy and curettage. Diathermy.
