What is mentoring?
A developmental relationship between a more experienced person (mentor) and a less experienced person (protégé - now commonly called a mentee)
What are the two types of mentoring
formal and informal
What is formal mentoring?
-Programs created by organizations to assist in assimilation and development of people
-Created for trainees to acquaint them with work place
To assist in the development of designated employees – high potentials, minorities and women or new managers
-Programs run for a defined period – typically 6 months to one year
-Often training occurs for both the mentor and the mentee
What is informal mentoring?
Pairings that occur because less experienced person decides to form relationship with someone whose skills, experience or perspective has meaning to them
Typically these are not defined
One or the other or both may not even consider a mentoring relationship to exist
Typified by meetings at intervals
What is the mentee’s role in mentoring?
Most important thing – whether formal or informal - mentee needs to remember for a mentoring relationship to work is:
Burden is on the mentee to move relationship forward by scheduling time, following up, or staying in touch
Role of the mentor?
Most important thing for mentor to remember – formal or informal – is that mentors can learn from mentees AND the burden of the relationship is on the mentee
This means mentors should avoid over managing the relationship Offer advice, perspective, Not insist
What is coaching?
Coaches are trained to facilitate interaction with “clients” and guide them in assessing and considering courses of action and consequences, but usually there is not a personal, relationship that develops between the coach and client
Coaches are often paid for their work, mentors are not paid by the mentee
