Sexual and Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction?
Reproduction which involves the fusion of male and female gametes
During sexual reproduction in animals, which two gametes fuse together?
The two gametes that fuse are sperm and ova (eggs)
During sexual reproduction in plants, which two gametes fuse together?
The two gametes that fuse are pollen and ova (eggs)
Does sexual reproduction lead to genetically identical offspring?
No - it leads to genetically different offspring.
Is a sperm cell haploid or diploid?
Haploid (23 chromosomes in humans)
What does fertilisation mean?
The fusion of male & female gametes
What is asexual reproduction?
Reproduction involving only one parent.
Does asexual reproduction lead to genetically identical offspring?
Yes, it does.
Do animals mostly reproduce through sexual reproduction?
Yes - this leads to lots of genetic variation in offspring
Do fungi mostly reproduce via sexual reproduction?
No, they reproduce via mitosis (a form of asexual reproduction)
Do plants reproduce via sexual reproduction or asexual reproduction?
They can reproduce using both depending on the species of plant.
Do bacteria reproduce via sexual or asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction, through binary fission.
Does asexual reproduction in plants use mitosis or meiosis?
Mitosis.
