DNA 1 - Chromosomes, Genome & Migration Flashcards
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleic acid
What is a chromosome?
A long DNA molecule with part of the genetic material of an organism
Where are chromosomes located in a cell?
The nucleus.
How many chromosomes are there in a typical human cell?
46 (23 pairs)
What is the structure of DNA?
DNA is a polymer, with two strands wrapped around each other in a double helix shape.
What are sex chromosomes?
The 23rd pair of chromosomes, which determine whether an individual is male or female.
What sex chromosomes do humans have?
XX (Female)
XY (Male)
What is a gene?
A gene is a small section of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a specific sequence of amino acids to make one protein.
What is the genome of an organism?
The entire genetic material of that organism.
How could understanding the human genome help science?
- Allows scientists to search for genes that link to specific diseases
- Helps us understand and treat inherited disorders
- Permits us to trace human migration patterns over time
