Q

How did Bem measure androgyny?

A
  • created a psychological test called the Bem sex role inventory
  • Bem asked 100 undergraduates which personality traits they thought were desirable for men and women
  • they were given a list of personality traits of 40 items : 20 masculine, 20 feminine and 20 androgynous
  • Each person rates themselves on a 7 point Lickert scale ranging from almost never true to almost always true
  • Numerical scores for all masculine items for are added up and the same for all feminine items, and then a person is given a score for femininity, masculinity and androgyny
