Yes, they disagree though on what and when.
What did Weaver, Byers et al discover regarding SHE (Sexual Health Education) in school?
Grades K-3 - 33%
Grades 4-5 - 32%
Grades 6-8 - 32%
Grades 9-12 - 3%
What is the general consensus regarding abstinence-Only Sex Ed?
- Teaching sex ed should be left to the parents, not the school.
- However, issue with this is that religious/conservative parents are less likely to discuss sex. b/c less comfortable, less knowledge, shame/guilt, etc.
what are the positives and negatives of Virginity Pledges?
+ On average, later first vaginal intercourse, especially if peers also took the pledge.
- At least as likely (and in some studies more likely) to have oral and anal sex.
- Less likely to use a condom
- Equally as likely to have STI’s
- ‘Virgins’ who took the pledge were much more likey to have had anal sex than those ‘virgins’ who did not take the pledge.
SO how effective is comprehensive sex ed in Canada?
- -> USA (abstinence) teen pregnancy rates doubled those for canada.
- -> Increased use of contraceptives.
- -> Decreasing abortion rates.
- -> Better communication with parents
- -> Improved sexual confidence
- -> Better empowerment to seek services related to sexuality.
While reducing risky behaviour, should also focus on positive aspects and other important issues in comprehensive sex ed :
- Sexual self esteem
- Confidence and empowerment
- Openness
- Acceptance
- Intimacy and love
- Relationships
- Pornography and media literacy.
