  • Teaching sex ed should be left to the parents, not the school.
  • However, issue with this is that religious/conservative parents are less likely to discuss sex. b/c less comfortable, less knowledge, shame/guilt, etc.

what are the positives and negatives of Virginity Pledges?

A

+ On average, later first vaginal intercourse, especially if peers also took the pledge.

  • At least as likely (and in some studies more likely) to have oral and anal sex.
  • Less likely to use a condom
  • Equally as likely to have STI’s
  • ‘Virgins’ who took the pledge were much more likey to have had anal sex than those ‘virgins’ who did not take the pledge.

  • -> USA (abstinence) teen pregnancy rates doubled those for canada.
  • -> Increased use of contraceptives.
  • -> Decreasing abortion rates.
  • -> Better communication with parents
  • -> Improved sexual confidence
  • -> Better empowerment to seek services related to sexuality.
