A

When the council or local authority decidemit’s better for children to be away from their parents for a while. Children live in care for lots of different reasons such as abuse, neglect, family breakdown or a parent or child’s disability or illness.

What is FGM?

A

FGM is the act of cutting some or all of a female’s external genitals, for non-medical reasons.

What are the three types of FGM?

A

Clitoridectomy - all of the clitoris is removed.

Excision - part or all of the female person’s clitoris and the lips surrounding the vagina are removed. The outer lips may or may not be removed.

Infibulation - outer lips and clitoris are removed and her genitals are stiched up so that she cannot have sex or have pleasure from sex. A small opening is left for the toilet. If she gets pregnant her genitals are unstiched and she gives birth and then she is sewn back up again.

For cultural reasons. It is a tradition.
