Definition of Site
The actual location of a settlement physically, along with its landscape charactertics, including: vegetation, climate, soil quality, wildlife, water availability and relief
Definition of relief
The shape of the land, the aspect of direction faced, altitude and gradient
Definition of Situation
Location of a place relative to it’s surroundings. Includes accessibility, proximity to resources etc.
Dispersed settlement
Houses spread out far away from each other. This is common in places of high relief (mountainous, high altitude areas) or agricultural areas
Nucleated settlements (6)
Occurs in a circular shape with buildings concentrated around a common feature:
- Flat land
- Religious feature
- Transport/Road junction
- Bridge
- Water source
- Defensive position
Linear settlement
Houses that are arranged in a line or an ‘arc’ shape. This can be along a road or water body.

Definition of high order goods/services
A good or service, usually expensive, that people buy only occasionally e.g. furniture, cars etc.
Definition of low order goods/services
A good or service, usually inexpensive, that people buy on a regular, often daily basis e.g. newspapers, cards, breads etc.
Sphere of Influence
The distance that people are willing to travel for a good or service
Threshold Population
The minimum number of people required to support a particular good or service
