Settlements Flashcards
What are settlements?
a place where people live
list types of settlement from smallest to largest
homestead/farm < hamlet < village < small town < large town < city < conurbation (e.g. Tokyo, Japan)
The land on which a settlement is built is called a
site
Settlement sites would have been chosen/grew because of?
- the number of natural advantages 2. their function
Name six natural advantages
- protection - near building materials - near a supply of wood - on flat land - shelter - near a river
protection
good view from top of a hill to see enemies approaching
near building material
early settlers needed wood and stone
near supply of wood
needed for fires and fuel
on flat land
easier for building and growing crops
shelter
south facing slopes have more sun and are protected from north wind
near a river
acts as a defensive mechanism and supplies water needed for drinking, cooking and washing
Why do you think people settled in Lisburn?
- River Lagan 2. Flat 3. Woods near by 4. Now it is because it is close to Belfast
Bridging point
a settlement at a place where you can cross e.g. a river
Which of the places labelled would be the best settlement point? Explain your answer.
A - wood (for fuel and building), river, flat, bridging make this a good spot. B - has wood and stone for building but it is a little far from water and bridging point C - would be easily defended but far away from supplies e.g. materials & water and the land is very sloped which is not good for growing crops and building. Also transport would be hard.
settlement situation
describes its location in relation to its surroundings e.g. landforms, land uses, roads and other settlements. Example: Lisburn is 12 miles from Belfast
