What is a map?
A map is a two dimensional drawing or picture of an area.

1. simple sketch of e.g. the street in which you live 2. complex ordnance survey map of a particular area of land 3. fully comprehensive representation of the earth
84
Give 3 things that maps are useful for?
1. Help you plan a route 2. Help you arrive quickly and safely at a destination 3. Helps you visulise what a place looks like so that you know what to expect when you get there
85
What are the 4 main map rules?
1. Title given to show what the map represents 2. Compass displaying north should be included to help users find their bearings 3. Scale used to indicate how far apart places and things are 4. Key is essential to explain what the symbols that are included on the map
86
Ordnance Survey maps are always printed so that ?????? is at the top of the map.
North

Ignore the small blue markings!
88
Scale is used to show?
how distances on a map differ from the way they are on the ground
89
What are the 3 main types of scale and give examples?
1. Statement: 1 cm represents 2 km in real ife 2. Ratio: 1:20 (means the map is 20 time smaller than it is in real life i.e. 1cm on the page = 20 cm in real life) 3. Linear: When the scale is drawn along a line e.g see diagram (NB. cm on map is drawn to scale)
90
If the scale is 1:50,000 what does it mean?
The map is 50,000 times smaller than the real world. For example, every 1 cm on the map represents 50,000 cm in the real world.
