What is depopulation?
The loss of population from an area, often in rural areas
What is 1 cause of depopulation?
Limited job opportunities
What are 2 impacts of depopulation?
Reduction in pollution of the area, and things like shops and schools may have to close because of the decline in people.
What does ‘Counterurbanisation’ mean?
The movement from one large city to smaller ones. Or from urban to rural areas.
‘Counterurbanistaion’ what is the main reasons for it to happen?
People often feel disconnected in the city and the cost of housing is higher in these areas
What does ‘de-industrialisation’ mean?
the reduction of industrial activity or capacity in a region or economy
Why is there more and more demand for houses in the U.K.?
More people are now living alone, people are living longer and the population is growing.
What does ‘Greenfield’ mean?
Land that has not been built on before, often in rural areas, that is being considered for development
What does ‘Brownfield’ mean?
A piece of land that has been previously developed and is now abandoned. These areas are waiting to be redeveloped.
What are 2 advantages of living in an ‘urban fringe’ housing estate?
Relatively close to a city centre. And, popular locations for offices and factories, so many job opportunities.
What are 2 disadvantages of living in an ‘urban fringe’ housing estate?
Increases urban sprawl. Built on greenfield land, so countryside can often be lost.
What are 3 benefits of eco-towns?
They can provide up to 20,000 new homes. They are largely car-free. And, they are much more sustainable than an ordinary town.
What does de-industrialisation result in?
Large areas are left with derelict land, and unused buildings. Often leading to redevelopment happening on these buildings.
What are 2 advantages of building on brownfield sites?
Helps rejuvenate old or disused areas. And, services like gas, water and electric are already in place.
