Coastal Landscapes Flashcards
What makes a wave ‘constructive’?
Have low energy
Transport material by long shore drift
Greater swash than backwash
What does erosion do?
Wears away rock, and removes the erodes material.
What are the 2 types of wave?
Constructive
Destructive
How is a Bay formed?
Soft rock that can be erodes easily forms a bay shape, with hard rock on either side, sticking out.
What does weathering do?
Helps wear away rocks, but leaves the weathered material in situ.
What makes a wave ‘destructive’?
Have high energy
Responsible for erosion
Greater backwash than swash
How is a Headland formed?
Hard rock stays sticking out of a coastline as it takes longer to erode than the softer rock around it.
How are beaches formed?
When waves loose energy they deposit sediment to form beaches. Usually sand or shingle.
How can you help predict a coastal flood?
The environment agency monitors sea conditions.
What is a Bar?
An extended stretch of beach material that grows across a bay, joining 2 headlands.
How can you plan for a coastal flood?
Flood education.
Escape routes.
What is a Spit?
An extended stretch of beach material joined to the mainland that projects out to sea
What is a natural impact of coastal recession?
Loss of habitat and plants
What are 2 examples of coastal hard engineering?
Sea Wall
Grounds
What are 2 examples of coastal soft engineering?
Beach replenishment
Cliff regrading
